OAKLAND — On the 30th anniversary of the deadly Loma Prieta earthquake, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES), UC Berkeley, United States Geological Survey (USGS), Senator Jerry Hill and others will announce the launch of the nation’s first statewide Earthquake Early Warning System.
The California Earthquake Early Warning System will marry a new smartphone application with traditional alert and warning delivery methods such as Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA). The system uses ground motion sensors from across the state to detect earthquakes before humans can feel them and will notify Californians so that they can “Drop, cover and hold on” in advance of an earthquake.

DIRECTIONS:
- From Interstate-80 West (I-80W) towards San Francisco from Sacramento.
- When arriving into Berkeley keep straight onto Interstate-580 East which becomes I-80W
- Keep right to take the curve towards San Francisco continuing onto I-80W; stay in the right hand lanes.
- At exit 8A, take ramp right for West Grand Avenue toward Maritime St. (if missed you will be at the toll plaza for San Francisco)
- Turn right onto Maritime St.
- Turn right onto Burma Rd
- Follow the signs on Burma Rd, you will come to the end (a flagger will be there to direct) and you should make a right to the road that leads to the Bay Trail.
- At the stop sign, make a left.
- Follow the road to the end, the road parallels the Bay Bridge and the pedestrian/bike trail on the Bay Bridge.
- There will be a flagger to guide you wards the parking.
